本劇一路走來，已經走過了八個年頭，第九季是本劇的最終季。八年里，主人公泰德（喬什·拉德諾 Josh Radnor 飾）從夢想成為一名建筑師到當上了大學教授，從差點步入婚姻殿堂到婚禮取消，泰德一路上走得磕磕碰碰，悲喜交加。他經歷過幾段失敗的戀愛，如今單身一人。盡管心里仍然放不下前女友羅賓，但他還是真誠地祝福羅賓與巴尼。與此同時，莉莉和馬修也面臨著人生的重要轉折，莉莉即將前往意大利開始新事業，而馬修也得到了夢寐以求的法官一職，夫婦二人會就此分離嗎？在羅賓和巴尼的婚禮上，又會出現怎樣的狀況？“老媽”會用一種什么樣的方式，與泰德相遇？
