一般的罪案調查劇要到每一集結尾才會揭曉罪犯的真實身份，但本劇每集一開始就會把受害人的身份和兇手的身份全都告訴觀眾。它并不以「誰干的」為看點，而是強調「為什么」。溫哥華警察局命案偵探Angie Flynn（Kristin Lehman）每天都要面對「為什么」，她必須一點一點地拼湊一起案件中所有的相關線索——兇手和受害人因為什么而相關？兇手的作案動機是什么？觀眾將跟隨Angie和她的調查組解開一個個謎團。
