吉姆（蒂姆·艾倫 Tim Allen 飾）是一名個性冷酷武藝高強的殺手，他只有一個弱點，那就是喜歡聽故事。這一回，他的目標是一個名叫芬奇（克里斯汀·史萊特 Christian Slater 飾）的攝影師，沒想到，這項本以為能夠輕松完成的任務卻被芬奇的一個故事給攪黃了。
故事中，一名江洋大盜和女兒將價值連城的寶物埋藏在了底下，然后被捕。在小賊“范”的幫助下，大盜越獄成功，范和大盜的女兒之間亦產生了真摯的感情。企圖洗刷過去污點重新享受社會生活的大盜和范決定盜用死人的身份。沒想到，范所盜用的身份是一個遭受黑幫追殺的攝影師，故事至此真相大白，原來芬奇就是故事中的范，吉姆的內心里開始了天人交戰，究竟是完成任務還是幫助范完成這個傳奇一般的故事？吉姆最終做出了自己的選擇。
