故事發生在上世紀七十年代，當時人們尚不能很好地接受女人當警察的新現象，因此女警很難真正融入男同事的團隊。年僅22歲的Jane Tennison是個實習警官，她所面對的高階男性警官全都是臭名昭著的沙文主義者。她真誠、專注、有抱負，從一開始就注定要成就一番大事業。但是很快陷入了麻煩——在她職業生涯中調查的第一起暴力謀殺案中，她將面對倫敦最兇殘的黑幫罪犯并親眼見證這些窮兇極惡的壞蛋給受害人家庭帶來的嚴重影響，更何況一場悲劇也將徹底改變她自己的人生。Jane和偵緝總督察Len Bradfield、偵緝警長Spencer Gibbs密切合作，他們或許是她當時唯一的依靠。
